Introduction to Colossians

The book of Colossians is a letter written by the apostle Paul to the believers in the city of Colossae, likely during his first imprisonment in Rome around 60–62 A.D.. Paul had never visited this church personally; instead, it was established through the ministry of one of his coworkers, Epaphras. Despite this, Paul writes with pastoral care and authority, addressing concerns that had arisen due to false teachings threatening the church’s understanding of Christ and the Christian life.

A central theme in Colossians is the absolute supremacy and sufficiency of Jesus Christ. Paul emphasizes that Christ is the visible image of the invisible God, the Creator and sustainer of all things, and the head of the church. By highlighting these truths, Paul refutes any teaching that would diminish Christ’s deity or suggest that human traditions, rituals, or spiritual intermediaries are necessary for salvation or spiritual growth.

Paul also encourages the Colossian believers to live out their new identity in Christ. He calls them to set their minds on things above, put off sinful practices, and put on the character of Christ in daily life. Practical instructions are given for relationships within the church, home, and community, showing that the gospel transforms every area of life.

The letter to the Colossians stands as a powerful reminder that all believers are complete in Christ. By holding fast to Him, Christians are equipped to resist error and to grow in faith, hope, and love, secure in the victory that Christ has accomplished through His death and resurrection.
