Introduction to 1 Timothy
The book of 1 Timothy is a personal letter from the apostle Paul to his trusted companion and spiritual son, Timothy. Written around 62–64 A.D., likely during Paul’s later travels after his first Roman imprisonment, this letter offers guidance and encouragement to Timothy as he leads the church in Ephesus. Paul’s words are filled with warmth, concern, and authority, reflecting his deep desire to see the church remain faithful to sound teaching and godly living.
A major purpose of 1 Timothy is to provide clear instructions for the organization and leadership of the local church. Paul outlines the qualifications for elders and deacons, emphasizing the importance of character, spiritual maturity, and a good reputation. He also addresses practical matters such as worship, the care of widows, and the responsibilities of various groups within the congregation, all with the goal of maintaining order and promoting spiritual health.
Paul warns Timothy about the dangers of false teaching and urges him to stand firm in the truth of the gospel. He reminds Timothy that the church is “the pillar and foundation of the truth,” entrusted with the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. The letter repeatedly calls for perseverance (NOT for salvation, that is secure), purity, and faithfulness, both in doctrine and daily conduct.
1 Timothy remains a foundational guide for church life, leadership, and personal ministry. It encourages believers to pursue godliness, uphold sound teaching, and serve one another faithfully as they await the return of Christ and the fulfillment of God’s promises.
