What Is True Christianity?

Christianity is not merely a religion, a tradition, or a system of rules. It is God’s revelation to man, centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and grounded in the Holy Scriptures. Christianity begins with God, who is holy, righteous, and true. It is not based on human opinion, but on what God has said.

The Bible tells us that God’s Word is our final authority. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) Because Scripture is God-breathed, it reveals truth about God, man, sin, salvation, and eternal life.

The Bible also tells us the truth about ourselves. Man is a sinner and cannot save himself. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” (Romans 3:23) No amount of religion, good works, or moral effort can remove sin or make a person right with God. If salvation depended on our own righteousness, none of us could stand before Him.

That is why Jesus Christ came. Christianity is the message that God has made a way for sinners to be saved. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) The gospel is the good news that “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

Salvation is not earned by keeping commandments or trying to live better than others. It is received by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9) A sinner is saved when he trusts Christ alone, not when he becomes worthy. Eternal life is the gift of God, not the reward of human effort.

This is why righteousness must always be understood in the right order. We do not live righteously in order to be saved. We live righteously because we have been saved. Faith in Jesus Christ is what saves the soul; good works are the fruit that follows. “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;” (Titus 2:11-12)

True Christianity therefore produces a changed life, but that change does not earn salvation. It is the evidence of God’s work in the heart. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) The believer should desire to walk in obedience, not out of fear of losing salvation, but out of love, gratitude, and reverence toward the One who saved him.

Christianity also gives hope. The believer looks not to himself, but to Christ, who will one day return. The Christian life is one of faith, prayer, holiness, and expectation. Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.” (John 14:1) The hope of the Christian is not in this world, but in the Savior who redeemed us.

In the end, Christianity is about the Lord Jesus Christ—who He is, what He did, and what He will do. It is the message that sinners can be forgiven, justified, and given eternal life through faith in Him. We are not saved by living righteous enough to please God. We are saved by believing the gospel of Jesus Christ, and then we are called to live in a way that honors Him.
